How does an e-cigarette atomizer work?

Although widely known as coils, these little components of your e-cig are technically atomizer heads. The coil is a component inside the atomizer. If your vape mod is the body, atomizer heads are the heart, a fundamental part of your vaping experience.

Housed within the tank, an atomizer head contains a coil of thin wire and wicking material. An atomizer head converts energy from the battery and heats the coil inside, this then vaporises e-liquid that is soaked into the wicking material, which is then inhaled by you.

There are many different options to choose, depending on the type of vaping experience you want, this includes different resistances and coil materials. One thing that remains constant no matter what type of atomizer you use, is that they will need changing at some point.

How do you know when to change your atomizer head?

An atomizer head can last anywhere between two days and two weeks, sometimes even longer. But there are factors that influence this. Such as how much you vape, your vaping style, what e-liquid you use and what power you vape at. This maintenance of your e-cig is essential to a consistent and satisfying vaping experience.

Your atomizer head will display signs that it needs replacing and these are usually very obvious.

Vapers will normally notice a change in the flavour of their e-liquid, this can be a completely muted flavour, or a slightly burnt taste. This is a clear indicator that your atomizer head needs changing, but they aren’t all this easy to spot.

If you tank starts leaking all of a sudden and you have ruled out everything else, it could be that your atomizer needs changing, as you are subconsciously having to draw harder to make your e-cig work, therefore causing it to leak.

It may also become harder to draw on, or feel ‘blocked’. This is also a sign that it is time to change your atomizer head.

Take a look at this helpful video on when to change your vape coil.

How to change your atomizer head

Each tank is slightly different, but in general most tanks have the same method when it comes to replacing your atomizer head.

  1. Remove the base of your vape tank which should house your atomizer head. (Take care that your e-liquid cannot spill during this process, some vape tanks cannot hold the vape juice when you remove the base. If this is the case, decant the e-liquid back into the bottle first).
  2. Using a tissue to cover your fingers, grip the atomizer head and unscrew it from the base of the vape tank.
  3. Wrap the used atomizer head in tissue and discard in the bin.
  4. Take your new atomizer head from the package and screw this into the base of your tank.
  5. Now you have to prime your atomizer head to ensure its ready to vape and to prevent it burning out prematurely.
  6. There are several ways to achieve this, but the easiest method is to reassemble your tank, fill it with e-liquid then leave it to stand for 5 to 10 minutes before vaping.

How to clean atomizers

We don’t advise ever cleaning your atomizer head to make it last longer. Using water through your atomizer head cannot only damage the coil and wicking material, but if it isn’t dried out properly before vaping, it can create steam instead of vapour which could be dangerous.

What is the difference between an atomizer and a coil?

As mentioned above, atomizer heads are known by many names and coils is one of them. But the coil is actually a component within the atomizer head.

The coil is thin wire, wrapped into a coil shape. When you press your button, it provides power to the coil. This then converts that energy to heat (If you could see your coils, they sometimes glow red when you are pressing your button), and vapourises e-liquid from the saturated wicking material.

Most atomizer coils are made from Nichrome or Kanthal. But there are different wire types that some vapers use. Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel are also available, but less popular. These tend to be used for temperature control vaping and aren’t suited to all e-cigs.

Vapers who us a rebuildable tank, RDA or RDTA are more likely to use coils. As these types of vape tanks require you to build your own coil from wire and add your own wicking material.
