What are nic salts?

If you are vaping a nicotine containing e-liquid now, it will probably use something called ‘freebase’ nicotine. Freebase nicotine is the most widely used, the ‘go-to’ nicotine in most vape juices and nicotine replacement therapies such as gums, patches and sprays.

Nicotine salts are the same form of nicotine, just in a different chemical state. Nic salts are more like the nicotine naturally present in the tobacco leaf. But what difference does this make? Leaving most of the jargon aside, the nicotine salt chemical structure means you get smoother nicotine satisfaction with much less throat hit.

Nic salts are also absorbed by the body differently. They are taken into the blood stream much quicker than traditional freebase nicotine. This sensation is much closer to the sensation of smoking.

Nic salts for Smokers

Why might smokers want to make the switch to vaping by using nic salt vape juice? The main reason is to stop the ‘new vaper cough’.

When you first move from smoking to vaping, one thing that can happen is a cough. This is completely normal and usually passes within a few days. It happens because the sensation of vaping is extremely different to smoking, it can take a little while to get used to this feeling.

But for some new vapers, they need a higher nicotine strength to combat their nicotine cravings. But this higher ‘freebase’ nicotine strength consistently makes them cough. Nic salt e-liquids are ideal in this situation.

It means you can still vape a higher nicotine strength, but by using a nic salt vape juice the throat hit sensation is almost entirely eliminated, thus no new vaper cough.

One other reason was touched on above. As nic salts are absorbed much quicker into our bodies, you can experience the same ‘nicotine rush’ that you would have with traditional cigarettes, so the sensation is much closer to that of smoking.

 

Nic Salt and sub-ohm coils

As mentioned above, it is recommended that you use nic salt vape juice in a lower wattage, higher resistance coil vape.

Sub-ohm vapes are designed to be used at much higher powers. This means they produce much more vapour and throat hit; in turn this means you are getting more nicotine per vape.

One of the pros of nic salts is that the vape is much smoother, the throat hit part of your vaping experience is almost completely gone. This also means that if your nicotine strength is too high, that sensory feedback is gone. Let me explain.

Imagine you are using a regular e-cig starter kit and a regular ‘freebase’ nicotine e-liquid. If you vape a nicotine strength that is too high, there will be a sensory response. The throat hit will be too harsh or you might cough.

Now imagine you have a sub-ohm coil and a nic salt e-liquid. If your nicotine strength is too high, you don’t have the same sensory responses to trigger you. As there is no throat hit and no cough. Also, nic salts are taken up by the body much quicker, similar to when we smoke. This means you can vape too much in just a few draws as sub-ohm vape kits produce so much more vapour per vape.

What are ‘next gen’ nic salts?

There are pros and cons to nicotine salts. Yes, they are great for people who may not like traditional nicotine, or who may cough when they vape. But they aren't a catch all for everyone.

One thing to consider with nic salts, is they have a complete lack of throat hit. This means that vaping an e-liquid with a high nicotine strength, such as a 1.8% (18mg/ml), feel no ‘kick’ at all. For some vapers this is perfect and exactly what they need, but some heavier smokers who are just making the switch may not. They may become frustrated as they are missing the ‘throat hit’ that they are used to from traditional cigarettes. Also, without the control of the throat-hit “kick” it is very easy for vapers to accidently get too much nicotine.
