Tips For Priming Your E-cig Atomizer / Coil

Have you ever suffered from a burnt taste from your e-cig?

Maybe your e-cig is lacking flavour, has a dry taste, or an atomizer head that just doesn't seem to last. These could all be symptoms of an atomizer head that hasn't been primed.

Often overlooked, priming the coil that is contained within the atomizer head, is a great way to prepare it to ensure that it is saturated with e-liquid before you vape. It is a simple process and can save you burning your coil and wick when you first install our new atomizer.

How does an atomizer head work?

Atomizer heads are the heart of your electronic cigarette. They produce your vapour and do a lot of the work while you are vaping.

Your atomizer head houses a coil and wicking material. There are different types of coil and wicking material available.

The coil of wire sits either vertically or horizontally and either has wicking material wrapped around it or sitting through the coil.

As you draw on your e-cig, e-liquid is drawn into the atomizer head. At the same time as drawing, you press the firing button on your battery which heats your coil and vaporises your e-liquid into an inhalable form.

How to prime a coil

New to Vaping

Slowly add a few drops of e-liquid onto the wicking material of you atomizer head. Try to avoid the middle to stop flooding

Starter Kits

Install your atomizer head in your tank and fill with e-liquid as normal. Leave it to soak for 5-10 minutes before taking your first draw.

Vape Mods

Before you fire your atomizer head for the first time, take a few sharp draws on your device to ensure your atomizer head is fully saturated.

Why is priming your coil important?

When you first receive your atomizer head, everything is dry. Your coil and wicking material have never been used.

If you were to install this into your vape tank and press the button with no e-liquid in it, the coil would heat up and burn the dry cotton that sits against it. If you were to then fill it with e-liquid, the burnt parts of the cotton wouldn’t go away and it would not only taste horrible, it wouldn’t work properly.

Now if you install a new atomizer head and don’t prime the coil properly, although it won’t be completely dry, there could still be dry spot on the cotton. If any of these dry spots are in contact with the coil, they will burn and you will get a horrible taste. Even if they aren’t in contact with the coil, you can still be affected. You might notice the muted flavour or not as much vapour production.

Properly priming your coil is essential to a satisfying vaping experience.

What if I didn’t prime my coil and it's burnt?

Unfortunately, if you didn’t prime your atomizer / coil properly and your wicking material is burnt, there is no way to bring it back. That taste will stay until you change your atomizer head containing a new coil.

If you have a dry taste, muted flavour or not much vapour production, stop vaping and go through the priming process again. You shouldn’t have to do it more than twice, so if you prime several times and are still not getting a satisfactory experience, remember atomizer heads are consumable items and on the odd occasion can be ‘dead on arrival’, essentially you may have a dud.

Try replacing your atomizer head for a new one at this point and your vaping problems should be resolved.

What if I flood my coil when priming?

On the flip side, you can over prime your atomizer head and it can flood.

If this happens you will experience gurgling and possibly some spitting of your e-liquid. If this does happen don’t panic. Stop vaping, go outside and firmly flick your e-cig away from you to expel the excess e-liquid from the coil and mouthpiece (going outside ensures none of this e-liquid ends up on your floor or furniture).

Once you have flicked out the excess e-liquid you should be fine to vape again. If there is still some flooding, rinse and repeat until you get a flood free vape.

Do I need to Prime my Disposable Vape?

As a general rule, disposable vapes do NOT need priming. Always check the instructions or guide that accompanies your purchase.
