What Is Mouth to Lung (MTL) vaping?
There are two main styles of vaping: MTL and DL. Both do the same thing, get the vapour from your e-cig to you. But they are differing mechanisms of achieving this.
Direct lung (DL) is the less popular method of vaping. It is taking the vapour directly from the e-cig to your lungs. Like taking a big breath in.
MTL vaping is the most common style of vaping and is most probably how you smoked. There is an extra step involved. You draw the vapour from the e-cig into your mouth, then you inhale it.
Why do you need MTL or DL e-liquids?
Technically you don’t. But if you were to use an e-liquid that had a high nicotine strength or a strong throat hit and DL vaped, it would be an uncomfortable experience. The throat hit would be too much and would end up with you coughing and spluttering.

Let us first look at what PG and VG are and how they affect the vaping experience. These are both diluents and e-liquids contain a mixture of them. They each have a different job.
Propelyn Glycol (PG) – Thin liquid. Carries the flavour, gives you your throat hit.
Vegetable Glycerine (VG) – Thick liquid. Creates the cloud of vapour you exhale and adds a slight sweetness.
Now we know this, we can deduce that if an e-liquid has a higher PG ratio, it will be thinner, have more throat hit and more flavour. If a vape juice has a high VG ratio it will be thicker, less flavour, but bigger clouds of vapour.

This is just letting you know whether the e-liquid has more PG or more VG in its mixture. This way you can see quickly if that type of e-liquid is suitable for how you want to vape.
What makes a good MTL e-liquid?
Now we know what MTL vaping is and what PG and VG are, we can start to understand what the ideal conditions for the perfect MTL vape include. These are: restricted airflow, a higher resistance vape coil, more PG in the PG:VG ratio, an e-liquid containing nicotine or nic salts.
Higher resistance vape coils have less airflow through them and their e-liquid inlets are much smaller. If we chose a thick vape juice, one that is high in VG, it might not wick properly into the coil. This means dry hits and burnt coils.
As we are MTL vaping, it means you will handle a bigger throat hit and more nicotine much easier. Ideal for someone who wants to get away from cigarettes to vaping.
