Vaping companies, particularly in the USA have been lambasted in the media for appealing to the youth market via their promotional campaigns. Whilst a lot of the criticism does seem unfair, some of the marketing campaign tactics in question could be seen as dubious.
Sponsorships with social media influencers who have a strong youth following, launch parties positioning the product as a cool accessory and celebrity endorsements from non-smokers are tactics which have pushed the boundaries of corporate responsibility. Whilst it may be argued that these strategies are used by other age restricted industries, such as gambling, the vaping industry gets enough unfairly negative press without companies adding fuel to the fire.
E-cigs hit the UK market over a decade ago for the purpose of helping smokers ditch cigarettes. Since then, vaping has helped over a million Britons quit smoking for good however there are still more than seven million people smoking in the UK.
