In May 2020 menthol cigarettes will be banned in the UK
Around 24.5% of all smokers use some form of menthol cigarettes, whether that be a straight flavour or the newer capsule / ‘crushball’ type. But 2019 is the last full year that they will be able to buy menthol cigarettes in the UK. As of 20th May 2020, menthol cigarettes will no longer be allowed under the TRPR regulations.
The alternative to menthol cigarettes
Despite the popularity of menthol cigarettes, the public awareness of the ban on everything menthol seems to be low. This means that many people who have bought menthol cigarettes as part of their daily routine, may walk into a shop after the 20th May 2020, and be caught short as they will no longer be available.
Most think tanks seem to be of the opinion that most people will either move over to regular tobacco, or make the switch over to a menthol flavoured vape. We are obviously hoping for the latter, as it coincides with our core ethos of empowering smokers to transform their lives.
News stories related to menthol e-liquids have surfaced recently. The headlines claim that menthol and mint e-liquids contain cancer-causing elements. However, the research is flawed so we want to set the story straight and put menthol vapers at ease.
The truth behind the menthol scare stories
Research from the US has assessed the levels of pulegone in menthol and mint flavoured e-liquids. The results claimed that the three e-liquids tested from leading US brands contained concerning levels of pulegone, which according to the FDA can have carcinogenic properties.
UK public health experts have been quick to respond and explained that the findings are based on assumptions.
Dr Lion Shahab, University College London said,
The findings are, however, limited for a number of reasons. The study did not assess actual exposure in humans which is important because exposure is not simply a function of e-liquid constituents but also of the interaction between users and how they use e-cigarettes to warm up the e-liquid.
Further, the data used to derive the likely exposure profile comes from a limited number of e-liquids assessed more than five years ago; it is therefore unclear if results apply to products used nowadays. Lastly, there are no studies which have linked the constituent considered here, pulegone, to cancer in humans. By contrast, based on numerous studies of e-liquids, aerosols and actual exposure in humans we know that the level of exposure to constituents known to cause cancer in humans is magnitudes of order lower in e-cigarette users than in smokers. The results reported in this study need to be considered in this context.
Prof Paul Aveyard, University of Oxford also commented,
The study seems to have reported on the pulegone concentration in e-liquids, making the unjustified assumption that all the pulegone in the e-liquid is absorbed.
Furthermore, UK health experts recently spoke out on a similar subject amid more concerning headlines from the US. They reassured vapers that vapers that all e-cigarette products in the UK are tightly regulated for quality and safety by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Agency (MHRA).
This point should be reiterated in light of this latest research on US menthol products. Moreover, Totally Wicked E-liquids are subject to rigorous testing and do not contain any Pulegone.
