You may be thinking this is old news as vaping indoors has been banned since 2013 in New York City, but now the ban has spread and will soon be enforced across the entire state of New York. All bars, restaurants and offices within the State must now abide by the same regulations for e-cigarettes as are in place for traditional cigarettes.

Vaping policy differs significantly across the various US States, with some employing a much stricter view than others. New York tends to take a strict approach and was the first state to ban smoking in indoor places so this is a relatively unsurprising decision, especially considering the majority of municipalities in New York had already banned vaping in indoor public places.

Governor New York, Andrew Cuomo explained his decision as he said:

“These products are marketed as a healthier alternative to cigarettes but the reality is they also carry long-term risks to the health of users and those around them.

“This measure closes another dangerous loophole in the law, creating a stronger, healthier New York for all.”

This ban comes despite the majority of evidence showing no negative effects of passive vaping. The ban runs the risk of discouraging the smokers of New York to make the switch to vaping and could therefore ultimately contradict the aim of “creating a stronger, healthier New York for all”.

Although some recent pieces of US news lead us to believe that things are looking up for the vaping industry across the pond, these sort of sanctions once again group e-cigarettes under the same bracket as traditional cigarettes.

By imposing the same laws, it gives the impression that e-cigarettes are just as bad for you as cigarettes when in fact research from the UK not only states that ‘vaping is 95% healthier than smoking’ (Public Health England) but also shows that over half of vapers in the UK have now given up smoking.

You should always make yourself aware of companies’ policies before vaping inside but if you are travelling to New York State you are now aware that you must go outside for a vape.
