How much thought do you give to your e-liquid? Beyond the taste and labelling?
How much thought do you give us, as a company, or indeed other vaping companies?
Because if you do concern yourself with which companies you trust and what products you buy, perhaps you should read on. Totally Wicked is an e-cigarette company that has for 7 years been working conscientiously to make sure we demand the very best for our customers.
Take the child proofing and packaging of e-liquids back in 2008. It was TW that led the way with the Trading Standards team from Lancashire.
Take the campaigning against the TPD, recent research, summits, charities, and TW is there, quietly going about delivering our mission statement.
At the heart of our business’ leadership is an attitude that we will never stop moving forward and improving, setting our own agenda that drives us to focus only on our customers’ and partners’ needs. Why? Because we fervently believe that our sector can self-regulate, we can meet stringent standards without the need for over burdensome regulation, and we can do all of this and put our customers’ needs and safety absolutely at the top of the agenda.
Take the case of e-liquids…
Last year a TV documentary published some worrying test results regarding e-liquids supplied by companies other than our own, where a team of scientists found a concerning chemical – namely diacetyl. This chemical is used as a flavouring, and although safe for use in food, it has been associated with the development of respiratory dysfunction when inhaled.
This year another brand, based in America, has published some test results for every single e-liquid it sells. Shockingly, many of those tested showed high levels of diacetyl and acetyl propionyl. Interestingly though, this company has decided to continue to sell and stock all of the e-liquids that tested positive for diacetyl and acetyl propionyl.
One has to ask, why?
How can this be of benefit to the vaper?
Dr Farsalinos was asked to comment about the American results and, according to one source, he said “ the results are extremely worrying.”
Let’s now look at TW e-liquids.
We know where our ingredients come from; all are made to GMP standards (good manufacturing practice), all are sourced from within the UK, we were one of the very first companies to use UK produced pharmaceutical grade nicotine and diluents, and all our flavourings are GRAS (generally recognized as safe) food grade. Our flavourings have also been screened for inhalation suitability. But after the sensationalist TV documentary, we decided that perhaps our knowledge was not good enough. Were our e-liquids actually as safe as we could possibly make them?
To answer this question we immediately sent our e-liquids to be tested by SkyLab-Med Laboratories based in Athens, where they were tested under a regime specified by Dr Konstantinos Farsalinos. Dr Farsalinos is one of the most eminent e-cigarette researchers in the field. We sent them the Red Label Range, the Odyssey Range, the Gold Standard Concentrates and the Titan range. We had them tested for content of diacetyl, acetyl propionyl and acetoin down to trace levels.
Each range has taken several months to test; this has been a thorough and detailed examination.
All the above ranges have now been fully tested for these substances. Acetoin is not considered particularly harmful via inhalation, especially in small quantities, but its use in e-liquid has previously been raised as a concern. For this reason TW decided to withdraw any e-liquid that contained even trace levels of any of the 3 compounds from our ranges.
The results confirmed our internal testing and quality procedures.
Whilst two flavour concentrates contained trace levels of the above-mentioned compounds, and were immediately withdrawn from sale, all other e-liquids produced clear results.
We make all of our e-liquids in a clean room facility, using highly precise metering of quantities and quality systems. All batches are carefully sampled and recorded, with the bottles marked to enable recall or withdrawal should any issue ever be detected. Packaging is also an important part of this process, as we have to make sure we provide all the correct and required information and that the bottles comply with child proof ISO and CLP standards.
But we are not leaving it there; as continuous improvement is central to our business philosophy. Because of this, we have employed Dr Peter Gibbons as our Senior Research Chemist. He has been brought into the team to enable us to undertake rigorous in house testing and help us move forward with exciting new e-liquid product development.
We have a new test laboratory currently being equipped, and in July of this year, we will open our new automated bottling plant, complete with higher standard clean room facilities and environmental condition control for all fluid ingredients essential for stable storage. This manufacturing and technical facility we believe is the first dedicated UK design and build project to define, design, build and equip any tobacco independent e-liquid business. Our manufacturing standards, specifications and test regimes are constantly reviewed as research data drives the industry standards to higher levels, and we will be at the forefront of this.
We will let you know more about our plans when we publish future in-depth posts that will introduce our new Chemistry PhD, Peter, and will give further information about our new manufacturing and technical facility and e-liquid R&D laboratory.
We are going above and beyond what other companies demand of themselves because we believe nothing is too good for our customers, and that includes making sure that our e-liquids are as safe and tasty as we can make them and not selling anything else.
The TW logo is a “Smoking Joker”, an irony that is often lost on many that still refuse to accept vaping represents a much safer alternative to combustible tobacco, despite the overwhelming evidence, and who would also attempt to suggest that our sector cannot be trusted to act in the best interest of its customers. At Totally Wicked we say to these naysayers: ‘…you are wrong…’ and to our customers; that behind our logo is a trusted business that has your best interests at the centre of all that we do.
