Between January and July 2019, the UK smoking rate has fallen by 2.2%
According to the national smoking study, there have been 200 fewer smokers every hour since the start of 2019. The study carried out by the University College London focuses on smoking and quitting trends. It is based on monthly household surveys and highlighted the drop in smoking rates in the UK.
Yet even with smoking rates being the lowest ever, there are still millions of smokers in the UK. Smokers account for 14.4% of the adult population. This is why Public Health England is encouraging smokers to take part in Stoptober.
Stoptober set to have positive impact on UK smoking rates
Stoptober is a government campaign that begins on the 1st of October and encourages smokers to take part in the ‘nation’s biggest quit attempt’.
Yvonne Doyle, Director for Health Protection and Medical Director at PHE, said:
It’s really encouraging to see these early signs of such a fast drop in smokers but we’ve still got a way to go to achieve our ambition of a smoke-free society. That’s why Stoptober is back and we are encouraging all smokers to take part.
Giving up smoking is the best thing a smoker can do for their health and it can also help save money – in just 28 days smokers will start to notice so many benefits.
This news is extremely encouraging, with so many choices for smokers nowadays, it comes as no surprise that they are finding it easier to quit. Traditional nicotine replacement therapies are available, as well as alternatives such as e-cigarettes. Totally Wicked actively takes part in Stoptober each year and this year we can offer even more, as most of our stores are now trained in smoking cessation, so can offer even more advice and guidance.
Approach to vaping: UK vs USA
With positive stories like this coming from the UK, it begs the questions why do we take such a different view, compared to other countries, when it comes to smoking cessation and vaping?
BBC Radio 4 have a program called ‘The Briefing Room’. On the 19th of September they covered vaping in a segment called ‘Smoke Alarm: What are the risks of vaping?’, which looks at the growing disparity between countries such as the USA and UK and how they think so differently about vaping.
