There is already an abundance of evidence to show that vaping can help smokers quit. Now, a recent study conducted in the US has found that smokers who take up vaping show a much greater rate of quitting. This is true even when they don’t intend to quit at all.
The study looked at the behaviour of 1,600 people who smoked and had no intention of quitting. It found that 28% of new vapers stopped using tobacco products as a natural transition, rather than a planned quit attempt. From those that didn’t use a vape, only 5.8% quit smoking.
This shows that vaping can help smokers quit cigarettes all together, even if that isn’t their original intention.
The benefits of vaping over smoking
There are many reasons for smokers to begin vaping, including cost, health benefits and convenience. Being able to vape indoors at home without the lingering smell, or risk to family member’s health is attractive for many.
Vaping is drastically cheaper than smoking with the average smoker saving an average £3200 a year. This is a huge difference, especially to low income households. An Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) survey found that smoking is much more common among those on a lower income. Switching to vaping can greatly reduce the financial strain from smoking for those that need it most.
This study shows that people can transition to quitting smoking altogether through dual-use of a vape. The most successful and proven method of quitting smoking remains being totally committed to a quit attempt, as advised by the National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training (NCSCT). Every cigarette you don’t smoke is an achievement, but not smoking at all is best for your health.
Numerous studies by official governing bodies have shown that vaping is much safer alternative to smoking. Public Health England and Cancer Research UK have both stated that vaping is 95% safer than smoking.
Vaping has helped countless smokers quit
The US study does show that vaping can help smokers quit unintentionally. However we shouldn’t discredit the achievements of those that have made a conscious attempt to quit smoking using e-cigarettes. The NHS found that in 2019 and 2020 roughly 58% – 74% of Stop Smoking Service users who decided to quit with vaping managed to do so. However, in the same article the NHS reported that 38% of smokers surveyed in 2020 incorrectly believed that vaping was as harmful as smoking. Sadly 15% were even more badly misled, and thought it was more harmful. The NHS and other significant bodies continue to endorse vaping as a healthier alternative and effective smoking cessation aid. This will hopefully give more smokers the confidence to make the switch.
