This is a question that\u2019s popped up a lot since VPD hit on 1 October. Vaping Products Duty is live, e-liquid is taxed, and if you&#8217;re a smoker thinking about switching, you&#8217;re probably doing a bit of pondering yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The short answer is yes, vaping is still a lot cheaper than smoking, and the gap hasn&#8217;t closed. If anything, it&#8217;s got wider, because tobacco duty went up on the very same day. We&#8217;ll show you exactly how much, at 5, 10, 15 and 20 cigarettes a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What changed on 1 October for smokers and vapers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two things happened on the same day. First, Vaping Products Duty arrived. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/introduction-of-vaping-products-duty-from-1-october-2026\/introduction-of-vaping-products-duty-from-1-october-2026\">HMRC<\/a>, it&#8217;s a flat \u00a32.20 per 10ml of liquid, with 20% VAT on top of the duty, so roughly \u00a32.64 extra per 10ml. We&#8217;ve gone through how that works in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk\/vaped\/what-is-vaping-products-duty-vpd\/\">our guide to what VPD actually is<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, tobacco duty went up as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/rates-and-allowances-excise-duty-tobacco-duty\/excise-duty-tobacco-duty-rates\">HMRC&#8217;s rates<\/a> from 1 October are \u00a3394.09 per 1,000 cigarettes plus 16.5% of the retail price (up from \u00a3353.50 per 1,000 in November 2025), and \u00a3574.30 per kg for hand-rolling tobacco (up from \u00a3503.80). The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/tobacco-duty-rate-changes\/changes-to-tobacco-duty-rates-from-26-november-2025-and-1-october-2026\">government&#8217;s policy paper<\/a> says the rise includes the usual annual uprating plus an extra \u00a32.20 per 100 cigarettes and \u00a32.20 per 50g of other tobacco.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk\/vaped\/app\/uploads\/2026\/08\/calendar-icon-1.jpg\" alt=\"calendar icon\" class=\"wp-image-28920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk\/vaped\/app\/uploads\/2026\/08\/calendar-icon-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk\/vaped\/app\/uploads\/2026\/08\/calendar-icon-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk\/vaped\/app\/uploads\/2026\/08\/calendar-icon-1-75x75.jpg 75w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Treasury&#8217;s stated aim is to keep vaping cheaper than smoking, and we covered the reasoning in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk\/vaped\/why-has-the-uk-government-introduced-a-vape-tax\/\">why the UK government introduced a vape tax<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What smoking actually costs now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pack prices are the slippery bit, because there&#8217;s no up to date official average. The ONS stopped publishing its series, and the last figure it gave was <a href=\"https:\/\/ecigone.co.uk\/blogs\/ecigone-blogs\/is-vaping-cheaper-than-smoking\">\u00a316.60 in January 2025, as noted by Ecigone<\/a>. So we&#8217;ve used two real shelf prices instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"background-color:#f5f3ea\" class=\"wp-block-list has-background\">\n<li><strong>Premium:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trolley.co.uk\/grocery-price-index\/brand_category_store\/?brand=Marlboro&amp;store_id=2&amp;category=Cigarettes\">Tesco lists Marlboro Gold at \u00a319.93 for 20<\/a>, up from \u00a316.80 a year ago according to Trolley&#8217;s price comparison<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Budget:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trolley.co.uk\/explore\/lambert-butler\">Lambert &amp; Butler Blue is listed at \u00a315.20 to \u00a316.40 online<\/a> depending on the supermarket, and we&#8217;ve used the higher figure of \u00a316.40 to be fair to the smoker<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are supermarket prices checked on 19 October 2026. What we&#8217;ve done is use some sensible, round assumptions so the maths is easy to follow and easy to adjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>If you smoke<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>We&#8217;ve assumed you&#8217;d vape about<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Which is roughly<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>5 a day<\/td><td>1ml a day<\/td><td>a 10ml bottle every 10 days<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>10 a day<\/td><td>2ml a day<\/td><td>a 10ml bottle every 5 days<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>15 a day<\/td><td>3ml a day<\/td><td>a 10ml bottle every 3 days or so<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>20 a day<\/td><td>4ml a day<\/td><td>a 10ml bottle every 2 to 3 days<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are illustrative, not a recommendation. Plenty of people use more or less, and the NHS is clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/better-health\/quit-smoking\/ready-to-quit-smoking\/vaping-to-quit-smoking\/vaping-myths-and-the-facts\/\">vaping more often than you used to smoke is normal<\/a>, so don&#8217;t read these as a target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We&#8217;ve priced the liquid using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totallywicked-eliquid.co.uk\/red-label-e-liquid\">Red Label<\/a>, in two ways. The first is our current price, held under Price Lock. The second is our estimate with flat duty applied, which is simply today&#8217;s price plus the \u00a32.64 per 10ml VPD would add. The &#8220;VPD estimate&#8221; columns are what we think the same liquid would cost with the full duty added on top, whenever that day comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side by side, per year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here&#8217;s the bit most people are really after. That&#8217;s before you factor in anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A couple of things we haven&#8217;t counted, so you&#8217;re not surprised. Hardware costs money, whether it&#8217;s a refillable pod kit or replacement coils, and we&#8217;ve left those out because they vary so much. And the NHS notes vaping works out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/better-health\/quit-smoking\/ready-to-quit-smoking\/vaping-to-quit-smoking\/\">at around a third of the cost of smoking once you&#8217;ve bought the kit<\/a>, which is a more cautious figure than ours, because it includes that initial hardware spend and ongoing cost. Both numbers tell the same story, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the duty hits each differently<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VPD is a fixed amount per ml. At our assumed 4ml a day, a 20 a day equivalent vaper would pay roughly \u00a31.06 a day in duty and VAT on the duty, which is around \u00a3385 a year. That&#8217;s our own calculation from HMRC&#8217;s published rate, not a Totally Wicked price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tobacco duty is partly a fixed amount and partly tied to the shelf price. HMRC&#8217;s estimate, as <a href=\"https:\/\/whatschanging.co.uk\/tobacco-duty-october-2026\/\">reported by What&#8217;s Changing UK<\/a>, is that the October rise adds around \u00a31.21 to the duty on a pack of 20. That&#8217;s an estimate, not a promise about shop prices, but if you smoke 20 a day, that alone would come to roughly \u00a3440 more a year in extra duty. The headline there isn&#8217;t that vaping got dearer, it&#8217;s that tobacco got dearer faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about rolling tobacco<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you roll your own, the pattern is the same, only the pouch is bigger. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/rates-and-allowances-excise-duty-tobacco-duty\/excise-duty-tobacco-duty-rates\">HMRC rate for hand-rolling tobacco<\/a> rose from \u00a3503.80 to \u00a3574.30 per kg, and HMRC&#8217;s estimate, again <a href=\"https:\/\/whatschanging.co.uk\/tobacco-duty-october-2026\/\">as reported by What&#8217;s Changing UK<\/a>, is an extra \u00a32.54 in duty on a 30g pouch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On shelf prices, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesco.com\/shop\/en-GB\/products\/305384936\">Tesco lists a 30g pouch of Lambert &amp; Butler Blue at \u00a324.90<\/a>, which works out at \u00a3830 per kg. We haven&#8217;t built a roll-up table because how many roll-ups you get from a pouch depends on how you roll, and we&#8217;d rather not guess. The duty is an added cost nobody really wants to pay, but tobacco duty rose on the same day and from a much higher starting point. Even if you add the full estimated duty to our current prices, a smoker of any amount would spend a fraction of their cigarette budget on liquid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our prices are holding for now, so there&#8217;s no need to rush. If you&#8217;re thinking about switching, you can do it at a pace that suits you.
