Today, the 10th of March 2021, National No Smoking Day, Yorkshire Cancer Research have released a documentary called ‘Vaping Demystified’. The full video is available at the bottom of the page or you can click this link to get there.
It is just over 30 minutes long, but that will go by quickly. It is an easy watch and absolutely worth half an hour of your time.
The film starts with Stuart Griffiths, Director of Research and Services at Yorkshire Cancer Research. He states that each year they see 4000 new cases of Cancer caused by smoking in Yorkshire alone. A figure sure to shock many, while being a normal fact of life for others.
Looking at the history of e-cigarettes and how the modern vape came to be, the documentary gives people an insight into vaping that they may not have had before.
We also get to see the stark reality of negative media coverage impact, when the general public give their opinions on e-cigs. Many think that it is as bad as or worse than smoking, which is completely false. Many people are not aware of ground breaking studies involving vaping. Including Public Health England’s (PHE) landmark 2015 report, which bore the statement “E-cigarettes are 95% less harmful than tobacco”. Over nearly 6 years that figure of 95% is looking more and more conservative.

The film explores the current mood surrounding vaping. It shows us the media’s urgency to jump on any story relating to vaping, and to twist almost all of them into a negative light. Whereas we should be in a better position now than 5 years ago, in fact public opinion is now worse. Mainly thanks to anti-vaping campaigns.
USA Vaping ‘crisis’
A section of the film touches on the ‘vaping crisis’ that came out of the USA in 2019. The idea that vaping related lung injury was a new public health crisis went viral. Before the actual cause of the problems could be properly understood, the media had run with it, and the damage had been done. In fact, black market THC-containing cannabis products were the root of the problem, but this faded into the background. The myth is thoroughly dispelled in this piece of film.
Out of the thousands of people suffering from a smoking related illness, how many could have been avoided if they were not turned away from vaping thanks to this negative coverage?
It is refreshing to hear the voices of experts, including doctors, tobacco control, smoking cessation and public health experts. All speaking in union to support vaping, and dispel myths about e-cigarettes.
Independent Vape Trade Association (IBVTA)
In this short film our Technical Director, Liam Humberstone features as a spokesperson for the Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA). Speaking about the film Liam Humberstone said:
Vaping Demystified is a remarkable film, as it gathers the impartial views of credible UK experts, and delivers a unanimous opinion that there is never a time when it is better to smoke than it is to vape. There should never be anything controversial about telling this truth.
This is a refreshing, hard hitting documentary that is a must watch not only for smokers, but for vapers too.
