How to clean your vape kit: The ultimate guide

There’s a moment every vaper recognises. You take a pull, and something’s just… off. The flavour is muted, there’s a vague burnt undertone, maybe a weird gurgling sound that shouldn’t be there. Nine times out of ten, the answer isn’t a new device. It’s a clean one. So I’ve decided to write a comprehensive guide on how to clean your vape kit.

Cleaning your vape is one of the most overlooked parts of the whole vaping experience, and honestly, it doesn’t get talked about enough. Whether you’re running an open tank, a pod kit, or a full rebuildable atomiser setup, keeping things clean makes a big difference to flavour, vapour production, coil lifespan and general hygiene. Yes, hygiene. You’re putting this thing in your mouth multiple times a day.

I've written this guide to cover everything, from a quick daily wipe-down to deep cleaning your RDA coils. We’ll go through each device type separately so you can skip straight to the device that applies to you.

Why cleaning your vape matters

Let’s look at this properly. It’s not just about cleanliness for its own sake.

Flavour. E-liquid residue builds up inside your tank and on your coil over time. Older residue, especially from sweet or high-VG liquids, caramelises and carbonises. The result is a dull, muffled flavour that bears little resemblance to whatever you’re actually vaping. A clean tank and fresh wicking material gives you back that clarity you get from a brand new coil.

Coil lifespan. Gunk shortens coil life considerably. The residue acts as an insulating layer, forcing your coil to work harder to produce the same heat, which accelerates burnout. Regular cleaning, especially of rebuildable coils, can extend their life significantly.

Device health. E-liquid and general dirt have a habit of seeping into places it really shouldn’t. Connector threads, 510 pins, charging ports, button crevices. Left alone, this residue becomes sticky, then hardened, and it can start affecting electrical contacts and airflow channels. None of that is good.

Hygiene. Warm, damp environments with residual sugars. That’s basically a petri dish. You don’t need to be obsessive about it, but regular cleaning removes bacteria and keeps things sanitary.

One thing to be clear about: avoid bleach, ammonia-based cleaners, or anything with a strong chemical fragrance. These can leave residue on surfaces that touch your vapour path, and you really don’t want to be inhaling that – plenty of stories online of bleach-related antics.

Also, never use soap directly inside a tank or pod. It leaves a residue that’s hard to fully rinse out and it absolutely ruins the taste of whatever liquid you’re running.

How to clean an open vape tank (The standard method)

Open tanks, whether sub-ohm tanks, clearomisers, or mesh tank setups, are probably the most common type of vaping hardware out there. The good news is they’re also the most straightforward to clean.

Quick rinse (Weekly or when changing flavour)

This is the one you’ll do most often, particularly if you like switching between e-liquids. Mixing flavours without cleaning in between is a good way to end up with something that tastes really unpleasant.

1. Disassemble the tank completely. That means removing the drip tip, unscrewing the glass, separating the base, and taking out the coil. Keep the coil separate from everything else.
2. Empty any remaining e-liquid. Do this over a sink.
3. Rinse each component under warm running water, one at a time. Hold them under the stream and let the water do most of the work.
4. Dry everything thoroughly with a paper towel, then let the parts air dry on a clean surface for at least 30 minutes before reassembling. Longer is better.
5. Reassemble, fit a fresh (or cleaned) coil, fill with liquid, prime and wait 5 to 10 minutes before firing.

That’s it for a standard rinse. Simple enough to do regularly, which is exactly why you should.

Deep clean (Monthly or when things get gunky)

If there’s visible residue inside the glass or on the base, or the flavour has really gone south, it’s time for a more thorough clean.

1. Disassemble fully, as above. Remove the coil.
2. Soak the glass, base, drip tip and tank body in a bowl of warm water for 20 to 30 minutes. This loosens built-up residue considerably.
3. Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub any stubborn areas. Pay particular attention to the threads on the base, around the airflow slots, and any narrow channels.
4. For metal components with particularly stubborn residue, a cotton bud lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol works very well. Let the alcohol evaporate fully before reassembling.
5. Rinse everything thoroughly under warm water once more.
6. Dry, air dry, reassemble.

Check your O-rings while you're here

Those small rubber rings you find around the threads and glass sections. They seal your tank and stop leaks. When you’re cleaning, inspect them for wear, or cracking. They don’t need cleaning with alcohol (it can degrade the rubber over time), warm water is fine. If they look worn, replace them. Most tanks come with spares in the box, and replacements are cheap.

How to clean a pod kit

Pod kits have become massively popular, and for good reason. They’re compact, simple, and the draw is often closer to a cigarette than traditional open systems. But they do come in two distinct varieties, and the cleaning approach differs between them.

Cleaning closed pod systems

Closed pods have a built-in coil and are designed to be used until the flavour drops off, then thrown away and replaced. You’re not really cleaning these in the traditional sense. What you are doing is:

• Keeping the contacts clean. Use a dry cotton bud or a slightly damp one (water only) to wipe the metal contacts at the bottom of the pod where it connects to the battery. Residue here affects the connection and can cause firing issues.
• Keeping the mouthpiece clear. A rolled-up piece of paper towel or a cotton bud pushed gently into the mouthpiece will remove any condensation or residue that builds up with regular use.
• Wiping down the battery unit itself. E-liquid has a talent for finding its way into crevices. A quick wipe with a damp cloth around the pod slot, buttons and body will stop this accumulating.

Cleaning refillable pod systems (replaceable and non-replaceable coils)

These refillable pods offer the best of both worlds, a pod format with the ability to swap coils and clean the pod itself between refills. The cleaning process is closer to cleaning a tank.

1. When you’re changing your coil, that’s your opportunity to clean the pod properly. Remove the coil, empty any remaining liquid.
2. Rinse the pod under warm water. You can hold it up and look through to check for residue inside the reservoir.
3. If there’s visible staining or caramelised liquid in there, a soft cotton bud soaked in warm water can be used to gently clean the inside. Don’t use alcohol directly inside pod material if you can help it, as some plastic types are sensitive to it.
4. Dry thoroughly and air dry before inserting a new coil.

The coil connector at the bottom of the pod, where the coil screws or presses into, tends to gather residue. A dry cotton bud around this area keeps the connection clean and prevents short-term issues.

How to clean vape atomisers (RDA, RTA, RDTA)

This is where things get a bit more involved. If you’re running a rebuildable atomiser of any kind, you already know that maintenance is part of the hobby. But it’s worth going through the process properly, because there are a few things that catch people out.

The main distinction worth making here: rebuildable coils (the wire you’ve wrapped yourself, or pre-wrapped kanthal/stainless steel coils you’ve installed on a build deck) can be cleaned and reused multiple times. This is fundamentally different from the stock coil heads used in standard tanks and pods, which cannot be properly cleaned and should simply be replaced when performance drops.

Cleaning RDA coils (Dry burn method)

The dry burn method is the go-to for RDA coils in particular, since removing and replacing cotton is standard practice anyway.

1. Remove all wicking material from the coil. Pull the cotton out cleanly. Don’t leave any fibres.
2. With the deck still attached to your mod, pulse the fire button in short bursts at around 50% of your usual wattage. The coil will heat up and you’ll see residue carbonise and burn off. It may produce a small amount of visible vapour or smoke. This is normal.
3. Let the coil cool after a few pulses, then inspect it. Remaining residue will appear dark against the glowing metal. Continue pulsing until the glow is even across the entire coil and the residue is gone.
4. Rinse the hot coil under running water while it’s still warm. This is a good way to lift any remaining particles.
5. Re-wick with fresh cotton, prime, fill and you’re back in action.

One important note: do not dry burn nickel (Ni200) or titanium coils. This method is for kanthal and stainless steel only. Dry burning those other materials at high temperatures can release compounds you don’t want to be inhaling.

Cleaning RTA and RDTA atomisers (Full disassembly clean)

RTAs and RDTAs have tanks or reservoirs, so the cleaning process involves both the coil and the surrounding hardware.

1. Empty the liquid reservoir completely. For RTAs, this means removing the top cap or filling port and draining into a sink or towel.
2. Remove the build deck from the tank section (on most RTAs you unscrew the base to access the deck separately).
3. Remove all cotton from the coil and the wicking channels.
4. Dry burn the coils as described above.
5. Rinse the tank glass, chimney, top cap and base under warm water.
6. For stubborn residue on the metal parts, a 30-minute soak in warm water works well. Some builders prefer a soak in diluted isopropyl alcohol for a more thorough clean, followed by a thorough rinse with water. Let everything dry completely before reassembling.
7. Inspect all O-rings during this process. The ones around the glass in an RTA are critical. A failed O-ring causes leaks.
8. Reassemble, re-wick, prime, fill and allow to saturate properly before use.

Cleaning the mod or battery device

This is often overlooked because people focus on the tank and coil, but the mod itself needs attention too.

The 510 connector. This is the threaded pin at the top of your mod where the tank connects. E-liquid and small particles of dirt and fluff makes its way here constantly, and over time it creates a buildup that affects conductivity. Use a cotton bud lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol and gently clean the inside of the connector. Let it dry before reattaching your tank.

The charging port. A blocked or corroded charging port will eventually mean you can’t charge your device. Use a dry soft-bristled brush (an old toothbrush or a small paintbrush) to gently clear any debris from the port. Never poke metal objects into a charging port.

The body. A damp cloth or antibacterial wipe across the body of the mod, buttons and screen (if applicable) keeps it looking after itself and removes the oils and general grime from regular handling.

The battery bay. If you’re running an external battery device (18650, 21700 ect.), inspect the battery contacts inside the bay periodically. A cotton bud with a tiny amount of isopropyl alcohol on the metal contacts, left to dry fully before reinserting batteries, keeps the connection clean and the device firing efficiently.

How often should you clean your vape?

Here’s a rough schedule that works for most vapers. Adjust it based on how frequently you use your kit and what liquids you run. Sweet, high-sucralose juices gunk up coils and tanks considerably faster than simpler, less sweetened liquids.

Daily: Quick wipe down of the mouthpiece and the exterior of the device. Check for any leaks or residue around the tank base.

Weekly: Disassemble your tank or pod and do a rinse clean with warm water. Inspect the coil. Wipe the mod body and 510 connector.

Monthly: Full deep clean of the tank. Check O-rings. Clean the 510 connector and battery contacts thoroughly. For rebuildable users, this is a good time to assess whether the coil needs replacing or just another clean cycle.

When changing flavour: Always rinse the tank or pod before filling with a new e-liquid. Not doing this is how you end up with a mouthful of whatever flavour hybrid you didn’t ask for. I know this one all too well.

Things to avoid when cleaning your vape

A few things that catch people out, even experienced vapers:

Using boiling water: It seems logical, but boiling water can warp certain plastics and degrade seals and O-rings. Warm water, not hot, is the right temperature.

Not drying things properly: Reassembling a tank that’s still wet inside is asking for flooding and poor performance. Take the time to air dry everything. A minimum of 30 minutes, longer is better.

Getting the coil wet: For stock coil heads, water inside the coil head is not easily removed and will cause gurgling and poor performance. Keep stock coils away from water. Rebuildable coils are different, you can rinse them and dry burn them as described above.

Using soap: Warm water handles most of the cleaning you need to do. Soap leaves a residue that affects taste and is difficult to rinse out completely, particularly from narrow channels.

Skipping the O-ring check: A cracked O-ring is responsible for more leaks than almost any other factor. Checking them costs nothing. Ignoring them costs you e-liquid all over your pocket.

Cleaning with harsh chemicals: Bleach, vinegar in high concentrations, ammonia-based products. None of these have any place in vape cleaning. Stick to warm water and isopropyl alcohol at 90% or above.

When to replace rather than clean

Cleaning can extend the life of your equipment considerably, but it isn’t a substitute for replacement when something is genuinely worn out.

Replace your stock coil when: the burnt taste persists even after a fresh fill, vapour production has dropped noticeably and wattage adjustments aren’t helping, or you can see significant discolouration and residue even on the outside of the coil head.

Replace O-rings when: they’re cracked, flattened, or have lost their shape. If the tank is leaking from the glass seals and cleaning hasn’t helped, fresh O-rings are almost certainly the fix.

Replace the pod itself when: the plastic has become stained or discoloured beyond what cleaning removes, or the pod is cracked. Cracked pods can lead to leaking directly onto the battery contacts of your device, which is something to avoid.

For rebuildable coils, you can run them through many more cleaning cycles before replacement becomes necessary. A good coil with a resistance reading that’s still close to its original value can typically withstand around 10 clean and re-wick cycles before you’d consider replacing the wire.

Quick maintenance tips to keep your vape cleaner

A few habits that reduce how much deep cleaning you need to do:

• Prime new coils properly. Adding a few drops of liquid to the exposed cotton before installing and letting the tank sit for 5 to 10 minutes before first use prevents dry hits that damage the wick from the first pull.
• Don’t overfill. Most tanks have a clear fill line. Going above it can push liquid into the airflow channels and chimney.
• Store your device upright when possible. Laying a tank on its side increases the chance of liquid seeping into the airflow slots.
• Change flavours less frequently if you can. Every flavour change is a clean waiting to happen. Batching your flavour use by filling a tank fully before switching extends the time between cleans.
• Use quality e-liquid. Cheaper liquids often contain more sweeteners and additives that accelerate coil gunking. It’s not the only factor, but it’s a meaningful one.

Cleaning your vape isn’t the most exciting part of the hobby, but it might be one of the most impactful. A clean device delivers better flavour, fewer issues, longer-lasting coils, and a generally more enjoyable experience. It also means your hardware lasts longer, which saves money over time.

The good news is that once you get into a rhythm with it, it doesn’t take much time. A quick weekly rinse and wipe takes five minutes. A monthly deep clean takes maybe twenty. For that investment, you’re getting noticeably better performance from your kit every single day.

Whether you’re running a simple pod setup or a multi-deck atomiser build, the principles are the same. Keep it clean, keep it dry before reassembling, check your O-rings, and give your coils the attention they need.
