Getting started with vaping, or even just trying to improve your setup, comes with questions, and you’re likely wondering if there are any vaping hacks and money saving tips to help along the way. I’ve been vaping for a long time, and I’ve learned through trial and error what works and what doesn’t. This isn’t a technical manual; it’s the straightforward advice I’ve picked up along the way. These are the fundamental vaping tips that I believe make the biggest difference in day-to-day use.
Use Devices with Smart Tech
For new vapers looking for more control without the complexity, vape pod kits with built-in smart technology make life much easier. Kits like the Lumina Kit, Aeromax, and Mavro automatically detect the pod’s coil and set the ideal wattage for you. It takes the guesswork out of the equation. Plus, all three allow for airflow adjustments, so you can tailor the draw to suit your own preferences.
Priming is Top Priority
If you’re using a vape that comes with an empty pod, you will need to prime it before you use it. To some who read through my guides, you might be getting slightly bored of reading this over and over, but it’s one of the top vaping tips I can suggest. I fully get it – when you fill the pod, you want to vape immediately. But it’s imperative you wait the recommended 3-5 minutes for the coil wick to fully soak up the vape juice. This helps stop the coil from burning out, which would mean you’d have to wait even longer to vape your favourite e-liquids.
If you’re concerned about priming or think it’s too much hassle, try using a pre-filled pod vape instead. These are already primed and ready to go.
Avoid Overfilling the Pod
While priming is important, it’s also good practice not to overfill the pod. Doing so will flood the coil and lead to gurgling, e-liquid in your mouth, and a damaged coil that will need replacing. To avoid this, always leave a small air bubble at the top. Also, don’t squeeze the bottle too hard; when you release the pressure, air can rush back in and cause the e-liquid to overflow.
Master Your Vaping Technique
How you vape can make a big difference and mastering your technique is a good vaping tip. Try taking slower, longer draws rather than short, quick puffs. This technique helps prevent dry hits and generally produces better, more consistent vapour. If you find the hit on your throat is too harsh, try lowering your device’s wattage or switching to an e-liquid with a higher VG ratio, which is typically smoother.
Basic Device Maintenance

A little upkeep goes a long way. Keep your device clean by regularly wiping down the exterior and the mouthpiece. When you notice a burnt taste or that vapour production has decreased, it’s time to replace your coilâfor most people, this is typically every 1-2 weeks depending on usage. Whenever possible, it’s also a good idea to store your device upright to help prevent any potential leaking.
Battery Care Fundamentals
Proper battery care is crucial for safety and longevity. Try not to let your battery drain completely before charging it, and just as importantly, avoid overcharging it by leaving it plugged in for hours after it’s full. If your device uses removable batteries, having a few spares on hand is a game-changer. Keep all batteries away from extreme heat or cold and replace them once they no longer hold a charge well.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Even with a perfect setup, you can run into little problems. Here are some quick fixes:
- Spitback (hot liquid in your mouth): This often happens from drawing too hard. Try taking gentler draws or slightly lowering your wattage.
- Weak Flavour: First, check if your coil needs replacing. If the coil is fine, your wattage might be set too low to properly vaporise the liquid.
- Gurgling Sounds: This usually means there’s too much e-liquid in the coil. You can often clear it by taking a few sharp pulls on the device without pressing the fire button.
How to Save Money in the Long Run
While vaping is generally cheaper than smoking, there are ways to make it even more cost-effective.
Use Refillable Pods
These pods can be refilled multiple times – from my experience, around 10 times – before needing to be replaced. They let you buy e-liquid more cheaply and take advantage of multibuy offers and vape deals. For even greater savings, try buying e-liquids with our mix and match offer. A great example is our latest launch, the VLTZ Re:fuel 2. It produces excellent flavours when used with VLTZ Ultra e-liquid and is small and lightweight. Plus, it’s fully rechargeable and reusable, with only the pods needing to be replaced.
Consider Big Puff Vapes
If you prefer convenience, bigger puff vapes are a solid option. The VLTZ-X Spin, a 4-in-1 device, saves you from needing to refill a pod four separate times. Then you have devices like the ELFBAR Dual 10K, which can last for up to 10,000 puffs.
The Ultimate Vaping Tip
My personal favourite tip for saving money is a Totally Wicked Subscription. You get up to 40% off e-liquids and free delivery. It's contract-free and you can get pre-filled pods delivered for as little as £2 each.
