Taste is quite interesting and it can be affected by numerous things. For example, did you know that scientists theorise that you can actually develop liking certain tastes and flavours in the womb? Your love of curry or passion for all things sweet could actually be a hand-me-down from a pregnancy craving! It’s not surprising to know that the culture and the region you grew up can also heavily impact what flavours you like, but some taste preferences can even be genetic. While it's true that what you grow up eating plays heavily on what tickles your taste buds, apparently some people are genetically more sensitive to things like bitterness or sweetness.
Taste – it’s not all in the tastebuds
It's not just geography or genes that influence your taste, your other senses come into it too. How something looks or smells can also change how appealing you think a certain flavour is. For example, we all expect something banana flavoured to be yellow, and when it isn’t, it can confuse our senses. Memory and certain experiences also change what you think, or how you recall liking a certain taste. If you’ve ever become ill or had a negative experience shortly after eating a certain food, your brain might develop an aversion to that flavour.
Even enjoying a flavour too much can also affect how you taste it. A common phenomenon known to vapers is what's known as 'vaper's tongue'. What this means is that your brain has stopped actually tasting your e-liquid when you're vaping it. This is normally caused by vaping sweet or strong-tasting liquids for too long. Don't worry though, this can be remedied by switching to a different flavour or vaping a pallet cleanser like menthol.
Finding the right flavour e-liquid to suit your taste
