What is a 50/50 e liquid?

A 50/50 e-liquid refers to the ratio of diluents in the ingredients. There are two diluents in e-liquid, PG and VG. The mixture of these diluents changes aspects of the e-liquid, including the thickness of the juice and how it performs when you vape it.

When you see an e-liquid labelled as 50/50, it has 50% PG and 50% VG in terms of diluent concentration.

What are PG & VG?

E-liquid contains four ingredients: Nicotine, flavouring and two diluents.

These diluents are PG and VG.

• PG is propylene glycol
• VG is vegetable glycerine

Each of these diluents has a different job in the composition of your e-liquid. Let’s go into some more detail.

PG is a thin, colourless, odourless liquid that is used to make your e-liquid more viscous. When vaping it is responsible for carrying flavour and for the throat hit you experience as you vape. An e-liquid with high PG is best suited to a vape kit with higher resistance vape coils and lower powers.

VG is a thick, colourless liquid that has a slight sweet taste. This is used to make the e-liquid thicker and creates the clouds of vapour you exhale. An e-liquid with high VG is best suited to higher powered vape kits, using sub-ohm coils.

E-liquid will contain a mix of these two diluents in different ratios. If you have an e-liquid that has a higher PG ratio, it will be a thinner consistency, have a more pronounced throat hit and more obvious flavour, but you will get less vapour production.

If you have an e-liquid that has a higher VG ratio, the e-liquid will be much thicker, there will be less throat hit and flavour, but much bigger clouds of vapour.

There are many different options when it comes to the ratio of these diluents. You will see them displayed like this: 25/75 PG/VG or 70/30 PG/VG.

Why choose a 50/50 vape juice?

Now we know what the diluents PG and VG are, as well as what they are responsible for in the composition of e-liquid. We can use this information to make an informed choice as to what ratio to choose. We know that if there is one more than the other it alters the vaping experience from that vape juice.

A lot of vapers don’t want to make the choice between large clouds of vaper, more throat hit, more flavour. So, a 50/50 PG/VG ratio is the ideal choice. Having an equal mix of both diluents means it is suited to most vape kits, gives a medium throat hit, great flavour and regular cloud production.
